English

As readers and writers at St Andrew's we...

English sits at the heart of our curriculum – it is through language, story and text that children learn to form concepts, connect ideas and express themselves. Through literacy, in all its forms, children learn to both make sense of the world and shape their place within it.

We are encouraging our children to develop a love of reading and experience a range of fiction and non- fiction books. We want our children to become fluent readers who are able to reflect on their reading choices, analyses texts and ignite their imagination.

At St Andrew's, we strive to deepen our understanding of the written word by reading regularly; through the development of reading comprehension skills and by incorporating texts and opportunities to read widely across our whole curriculum. Children and teachers immerse themselves in captivating stories, engaging non-fiction texts and powerful poetry to motivate and inspire children to write for different purposes and audiences.

At St Andrew's, we value the development of technical vocabulary and strive to ensure our children understand terminology so they can articulate their thoughts with competence and confidence in different contexts.
