Governors
Governor's Role
School governors provide strategic leadership and accountability in schools. Governors appoint the headteacher and deputy headteacher. It is governors who hold the main responsibility for finance in schools, and it is governors who work with the headteacher to make the tough decisions about balancing resources.
Each individual governor is a member of a governing board, which is established in law as a corporate body. Individual governors may not act independently of the rest of the governing board; decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing board.
The role of the governing board is a strategic one, its key functions are to:
set the aims and objectives for the school
set the policies for achieving those aims and objectives
set the targets for achieving those aims and objectives
monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making towards achievement of its aims and objectives
be a source of challenge and support to the headteacher (a critical friend)
The headteacher is responsible for the internal organisation, management and control of the school and the implementation of the strategic framework established by the governing board. At St Andrew's CE we have a clear focus on school improvement.
Governor Duties
The governors meet all together once each term at the Full Governing Body Meeting. There are 3 further committees where more detailed discussions take place:
Resources Committees
Curriculum, Standards & Ethos Committees
Pay Committee
They are also called upon from time to time to form other committee as necessary.
All governors visit the school regularly to ensure they have a good understanding of the school, its staff and its pupils. The Chair of Governors will meet with the Headteacher fortnightly or more often when necessary. Each governor is linked to a specific areas in the school, meet regularly with staff in their link area.
Findings from the updates and meetings are fed back into the full governing body meetings at regular intervals
Governing Board Structure
The governing body is made up of a representation of skills from a range of different backgrounds.
